Free Smart Phone Apps

The following apps I use (or have used) personally and would highly recommend:

  • The You Version Bible App - with over 11 million installs per month.  This is the most popular app for Bible reading.  However it also has a wide selection of devotionals that can be enjoyed alongside your bible reading.

  • The Bible with Nicky & Pippa Gumbel - this is a great app for reading through the entire bible in one year and comes with a daily reflection from Nicky & Pippa Gumbel that you can either read or listen to.  Excellent resource!

  • Lectio 365 - Lectio provides daily prayer reflections three times per day.  The emphasis is not on reading the whole bible but rather regular biblical meditation.  Each session last 7-12 minutes and provides prayers and reflections alongside the bible passages.

  • Prayer Mate - Prayer Mate is a great resource for keeping track of the people you want to pray for.  It is therefore more of an intercessory tool.  As well as being able to add your preayer points, you can search paryer points from your preferred mission partners and organisations.

Other Resources

  • The REAP Journal (mentioned in Adam's message) is a physical book that helps you to read, explore, apply and pray through the bible each day.  The REAP Journal enables you to read through the entire Old Testament once and the New Testament twice over the course of the year.  You can check out a PDF of the reading plan here.  The St Hilary's Interns use the REAP Journal as part of their training program.

  • Spiritual Reading: one thing you may wish to consider over the coming year is how you can add spiritual reading as a discipline.  A few years I purchased an Audible subscription (currently on special) in January because I used to spend a lot of time in my car and enjoyed engaging a new Christian book each month.  Prefer a hardcopy?  Check out Koorong's latest releases here.

  • If you're keen to read through more of the bible this year.  Here are a couple of other resources that are worth a look.  Please note that I have not personally used these: Five-Day Reading Plan, read the accompanying article "6 Possible Objections to Reading the Bible in One Year".  Here is an alternative five-day reading plan that can be found on the YouVersion Bible app.
